THE commercial attributes of the Square Meaters paraded before him drew high praise from the judge at the 2007 Canberra Royal Show, noted Shorthorn breeder John Manchee.

” The breed has a definite place in the Australian beef industry,” Mr Manchee said.

”They have good structure, great muscling and their early maturity pattern makes them ideal for targeting the lightweight trade,” he added

Mr Manchee’s comments came at the conclusion of a judging session which saw a number of relatively new and small studs muscle out some more established showring performers in the 36 head field.

The day proved a triumph for Hunter Valley breeder Tara Green who took home the Supreme Square Meaters Exhibit award with her Junior and Grand Champion Bull Gumnut Valley Atrazine.

The 16 month old calf by Spring Valley Joe weighed 531 kilograms and caught Mr Manchee’s eye as soon as he entered the ring in the second bull class of the day.

”This bull has great length, presence, and muscling – a real stand out animal which will breed great calves,” Mr Manchee said

The Reserve Junior Champion Bull to Atrazine was Rainbow Bomber, a deep and well muscled 10 month old son of Woolaringa Ringo who weighed an impressive 354 kilograms.

The Braidwood based Rainbow Stud of Tony and Ellen Cairns picked up their second broad ribbon for the day when Rainbow Zippetty Do Dah was named the Senior Champion Bull.

The son of Rainbow Estate Xocet tipped the scales at 670 kilograms and 30 months of age and drew plenty of admirers for his muscularity and free movement. In 2006 and weighing 536 kilograms at 18 months he was Canberra Royal’s Reserve Junior Champion Bull.

Elendee Sonny, shown John Hodge’s Elendee Stud at Anembo and weighing 598 kilograms at 25 months of age, took home the Reserve Senior Champion Bull ribbon. Sonny was by Elendee Sunburn, the 2006 Canberra Royal Senior and Grand Champion Bull

There were many outstanding exhibits within the 25 females on show, but none stood out quite like Thurloo Park Zoe by Falling Waters Rupert.

The 28 month old heifer exhibited by Julie and David Thompson’s Thurloo Park Stud at Cootamundra was paraded with a magnificent calf at foot and went on to be named the Senior and Grand Champion Female.

The judge was clearly impressed by her length, udder and feminine outlook, and the job she was doing on her calf.

”This is an outstanding young cow with an outstanding calf at side,” he said

Thurloo Park Zoe was the Reserve Junior Champion Female at the 2006 Canberra Royal.

Equally impressive was Rainbow Estate Maree Y15 by Mandalong Rambo.

The 4 year old matron, who was the Senior and Grand Champion Female at the 2005 Canberra Royal, was acknowledged for her length, depth, muscle pattern and udder when she was named the Reserve Senior Champion Female.

The best of the junior females was Murrumburrah Annie, a 15 month old heifer shown by the Murrumburrah High School Farm Club.

By Thurloo Park Villan, her combination of length, femininity and muscle earnt her the Junior Champion Female broad ribbon.

The Reserve Junior Female sash went to The Kings Caramel, an 18 month old heifer by Mandalong Total and shown by Andrew Green’s ‘The Kings’ Stud at Mulgoa.
